FROM HARD KNOCKS TO HOPE & INSPIRATION

After an 8 week long nation wide search for a new name, the Choir created by Jonathon Welch along with many of the original members of the Choir formerly known as the Choir of Hard Knocks will now be known as the Choir of Hope & Inspiration.

“With over 8,000 hits on our savethechoir.com website and hundreds of suggestions for our new name from all over Australia and as far as the USA, the common theme and sentiment that emerged for the Choir’s new name, along with the messages of support for the Choir members, was the sense of hope and inspiration the Choir Members have brought through their singing, given the amazing journey from their hard knocks beginning two and a half years ago” said Jonathon Welch, the Founding Music Director of the ARIA, Logie and Helpmann award winning Choir.

“I’m very proud of the Choir’s achievements and fully support their move to independence. Their new name,
Choir of Hope & Inspiration, is exactly what this Choir represents to so many Australians” said Jimmy Barnes, the Choir’s Patron since their humble beginnings in September 2006.

Originally formed in September 2006 by Jonathon Welch as the Choir of Hard Knocks for the ABC documentary of the same name, the story of 52 people with a range of disabilities including mental illness, physical and intellectual disability, brain acquired injury, depression, schizophrenia, drug and alcohol addiction and some experiencing homelessness came together one spring day at Central Hall in Fitzroy and went onto become an extraordinary musical phenomenon, reshaping how every Australian would think about the issues facing those we see experiencing disadvantage, forever.

Against the odds, the Choir went on to win a Logie for the Most Outstanding Factual Documentary, an ARIA Award for the Best Soundtrack from a Television program and a Helpmann Award for the Most Outstanding Special Event at the Sydney Opera in 2007, the Choir went onto perform in over 80 concerts at Parliament House, Canberra for the Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, Sydney Myer Music Bowl for Carols by Candlelight, the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground) for the AFL Dream Team match, Hamer Hall with Kate Ceberano for the Melbourne International Jazz Festival and has been featured on Sixty Minutes , Mornings with Kerri-Anne, and has also received ARIA Platinum and Gold records for their first two CD’s.

“The journey for the Choir members themselves was more than just an amazing musical transformation though.
As they gained a sense of confidence, self esteem and pride through their involvement with the Choir many of the members returned to part time or fulltime study or work and have remained in close contact as an “alumni” and constant supporters as the Choir has kept singing” said Welch.

“But even more important than the music and singing for the Choir still today is the sense of community and belonging that the Choir members have found through coming together each week socially, and the Choir today is a “family”, albeit a musical one, bonded through their experiences and the pride and joy they share as they continue to give their magnificent voices to the world, bringing a positive “voice” to their Community, where they had been a silent and overlooked minority” Welch said.

Today, still with the committed and unswerving vision and passion of their Musical Director, Australian of the Year, 2008 Local Hero Dr Jonathon Welch, the journey of independence for the Choir from their early hard knocks beginnings to becoming what the public now believes they truly represent, the Choir of Hope & Inspiration along with the second Choir that is also a training troupe, the Choir of Pride & Joy of 70 plus singers, continue to rehearse every week and perform regularly throughout Victoria with plans to tour Australia, striving for what they have always dreamed and worked tirelessly to achieve with the support of an amazing staff and volunteer team of 30 choir “angels” – to change lives through their singing and be the best choir that they can be.

Monday 11th May - (next Monday) rehearsal at Petersham Town Hall

On Sunday 31st May we are having a sectional rehearsal to be held at Sally's place.

New baby!!!!

For those members and friends who know Vikki who used to sing with us here's some good news.

Vikki Ham (ex APC alto) now Gover gave birth to a baby girl on Friday 3rd April. The baby's name is Peta Sandra and weighed 2.94g. She is 48cm long and has blondy/brown spiky hair. She sleeps well. Luke has taken a week off to help out. Peta came three weeks early and poor Vikki was emailing work on instructions for her job as it was soooo sudden! If you want to contact Vikki call me as I'm not working at the moment.

YOU WILL RECEIVE AN UPDATED VERSION OF THE SYDNEY POP CHOIR CALENDAR ONCE THE EXTRA REHEARSAL DATE HAS BEEN DECIDED;;;;;;;;;;;;
SO IN THE MEANTIME....................here are some changes for your diary

Term 2 will commence on Monday 27th April @ 7.30pm. (this is not what the calendar indicates)

The mini CD launch scheduled for 31st May will NO LONGER take place on that date. We will probably launch the mini CD at our concert on the 14th June with Door In The Wall.

So remember to come back on April 27th.
Remember that 31 May will not be the CD launch.

Remember the extra rehearsal date will be decided on the 24th April when most members should have replied with their preferences.

Well here we are at the end of our first term for 2009 - ending with the recording of three tracks for our CD.

It's been a busy term and we should all be proud of the work we've done and what we've achieved.

a message from your musical director...
hooray for us!! a big congratulations to you all for the mammoth task we undertook yesterday. recording sessions are such hard work but well worth the effort, i think you'll agree. thank you all for rising to the occasion and engaging in the process with such enthusiasm and energy. when i looked out from the podium and saw so many smiles in front of me, it made me feel that it's all worthwhile. music and happiness, does it get much better than that?
daniel, our lovely recording engineer, said he really enjoyed working with such a happy bunch of people. and believe me, that is a fabulous compliment in the music industry, as so many musos take themselves far too seriously!! i have with me right now in my hot little hands, very rough stereo mixes of the takes we did... once i've listened through a few times, i'll be able to go back and edit it all together with daniel, after which we'll have the beginning of our fabulous cd. is the world ready for the sydney pop choir? well, we're coming anyway!
i trust you will all enjoy a well earned break. first rehearsal back next term, we'll be perfecting the next three songs i'd like to put on the cd "love for sale", "yakety yak" and "allentown". plus, i've got a couple of brand new songs up my sleeve too, but you'll have to wait till then to find out what they are ;)

Change of Rehearsal Venue

Sydney Pop Choir will now hold their rehearsals at

Petersham Town Hall

107 Crystal Street

Petersham

There is plenty of parking available at the side and the rear of the hall, and at the front of the hall, outside of Clearway hours. It is approximately a five minute walk to Petersham Railway station. It is also serviced by a number of bus routes.

This beautiful venue offers us plenty of space and wonderful acoustics.

We will still rehearse from 7.30pm-10.00pm on Monday evenings.

The last rehearsal for this term is Monday 7th July 2008.

Term 3 will commence on Monday 21st July, 2008.

If you are interested in finding out about us come to one of our rehearsals - you are most welcome. Your first visit/rehearsal is free.

Hello folks!
Well, a big hooray for us! What a night it was. I was so proud of you all and the way that you rose to the occasion. The preceding weeks were not without stresses and strains (just ask my gorgeous and endlessly patient partner Glennda) but we got it done. Now that I know we can do it, there's no stopping us.Please make sure you enjoy a well earned break. At our first rehearsal back on May 26, I'll be very happy to receive your constructive feedback regarding any aspect of "Choir @ Work". This includes everything from musical stuff, staging, costumes etc. to advertising, fundraising, general organisation and so on. If there are ways you think we could have done things better, now is the time to have your say.I've some new repertoire on the way for our next big concert at Blackheath in August, but please note that some of the repertoire from "Choir @ Work" will be performed again as well. I'd like to keep much of it in our current repertoire, mostly because I think we can perform it even better given the opportunity. As they say, when you're on a good thing, stick to it!

Learn Your Music

We have 4 rehearsals scheduled before the show, so now is the time for you to learn the all lyrics and notes of our songs.

It would be great to run the last couple of rehearsals right through the show programme without having to worry about fixing too many words and notes and dynamics. Remember we still need to learn the "movement" for the show - where we'll be standing and what we'll be doing for each song. We should be prepared to give a really polished performance on the 10th of May.

Hamper Raffle

Please contribute an item to the gourmet hamper if you haven't already done so. Your contribution needn't be an item of gourmet food, you may decide to donate some nice napery, candles, vouchers, DVD's, Cd's stationery etc... All beautiful items are welcome. Hopefully we'll collect enough for a large hamper and a smaller hamper. Raffle tickets will be avaible soon, to sell before our show and on the night of the show.

Together we'll put on a wonderful show

To borrow the words of a recent song "we're all in this together".

Here are some suggestions that you might want to put into place before the show. None of these are compulsory, merely suggestions.

Please discuss the show details with other members of the choir.
Arrange to go over notes that you may not be sure of.
Let the choir/your section know of any special clues or hints to help remember words or notes.
Get together with other section member/s half an hour before our scheduled rehearsal starting time, if you want to practice a particular piece.
Write out the words to the songs to ensure you have memorised them.
Set yourself small goals - eg. dedicate one or two days to one song and learn it really well, then follow on with the rest of the songs.
Listen to your learning CDs and midi files.
Print/photocopy a spare copy of your sheet music and leave it in your car boot so that you will always have it on you no matter where you are.

We've just been informed that the auditorium at Petersham RSL where we usually rehearse is unavailable from 4th February until 10th March 2008.

We will be rehearsing instead, in FUNCTION ROOM NO. 3 on Level 2 of the club.

We need an easily portable keyboard. Could you please reply to Matt at sydneypopchoir@yahoo.com.au if you have one we could borrow. Please let him know by 2nd Feb. If several people have one, we can rotate.

Our Idle Pops night will be held on Sunday 9th December 2007. This is an opportunity to get together socially to celebrate our end of year, Christmas and the wonderful group that is Sydney Pop Choir. Members of Sydney Pop Choir are welcome to perform any act on the night; it doesn’t have to be singing. Let’s see what hidden talents are out there. We will have dinner there too and the invitation is certainly extended to your family and friends. The cost is $25. (Children under 16’s price will be advised soon). Please buy your own drinks there.

The members of the Pop Choir will perform two songs to kick off the evening and two songs to wrap up the evening. The latter performance will sound interesting after we have partaken of some merriment.

Idle Pops will be held at the Newington Hotel, 292 Stanmore Road Petersham. If you wish to take part in the entertainment for Idle Pops please give your name and details of your act to Matt. You will need to organise your own sheet music, music, backing CD’s etc . Sally will probably accompany us with our songs so there should be a keyboard there.

Details re children’s prices, actual start time and SPC repertoire will be posted on the blog as soon as they are finalised. In the meantime start singing, dancing, conjuring, acting, juggling, dancing, telling jokes, whatever!!

OFF AND SINGING INTO TERM 4!!

Term 4 for Sydney Pop Choir has begun with some brand new repertoire and a fantastic new rehearsal venue.

We had a terrific first time rehearsal at Petersham RSL last Monday night, followed by some serious hilarity over liquid refreshments.

After a few teething problems ie
a) trying to locate the magic button to open the stage curtains so that Sally could be seen/heard at the piano
b) having the piano moved to a suitable position on the stage
c) turning the house lights up so that we were able to see and read our music,
we were off to a wonderful start. Petersham RSL Club was very helpful in getting things set up and they will do that for us each week.

It was good to welcome new and previous members. We hope you stay and enjoy all that SPC will offer.

Hi everyone at SPC.

Just a friendly reminder that we start back for Term 4 on Monday 15th October in the Auditorium at Petersham RSL, 7.30pm. Yay for us!!

We will be singing “Brain Damage” and some new repertoire with a summery/heat feel to it. Some of the songs are “Fever/Light My Fire”, Heatwave (Motown version) & Eternal Flame.

So hopefully we’ll all be there refreshed and ready to sing and learn.

The term runs for 10 weeks, though we need to have a quick chat about when we are going to finish up this year. Please pay your fees up front to ensure the continued smooth running of our group.

Remember too, that we have 2 gigs this term, one with Out Of The Blue on Saturday 10 November and the other with the Sydney Street Choir on Tuesday 27 November.

We just had word today that the Choir of Hard Knocks CD has sold 70,000 copies of our CD which means that we have an PLATINUM ARIA AWARD!!!!!

Who would ever have dreamed that this would be possible 10 months ago when I started the Choir.....

Release forms for the Opera House

In the next few days, two release forms will be emailed to members for the shows at the Opera House with the Choir of Hard Knocks.

One form is from the ABC and is one page; the other is from RecLink and is two pages. You MUST sign BOTH of them or you will not be able to perform.

Please complete the forms before the shows and Tracey will collect them first thing on Sunday morning. For those without print/email facilities we will have some hard copies available on the day, but PLEASE try and do it before then.

Please note the following very important information about the Sydney Opera House shows next week.

Call Times
The following call times are for arrival at the Stage Door which is located underneath the main steps, to the right hand side (looking at the Opera House from the forecourt).

Sunday 15th July 2pm show: Call time is 11.45am
Sunday 15th July 6pm show: Call time is 6pm
Tuesday 17th July 8.30pm show: Call time is 6.45pm

You must be present at this time - so get there early!!!

Photo Identification
You must have photo identification to show at the Stage Door or you will not be admitted to the House - no exceptions!

Valuables
As usual, each performer is responsible for their possessions so leave valuables at home if you can't keep them on your person.

Costumes
Don't forget to have your kit ready to go - see previous post.
Men: Under your black collared shirt you will need a red or white t-shirt.
Ladies: Black 3/4 or long sleeved t-shirt with round neck. Other accoutrements will be provided on the day. And don't forget RED lipstick!

Filming
The ABC will be filming all three shows for the purpose of a Christmas Special, but predominantly the July 17th concert. If any members do you not wish to be filmed, then they should not take the stage.

Term 3 Dates

With our suddenly hectic middle of July, it's been decided that we won't be returning for Term 3 on the expected date - Monday 16th July.

Seeing as we have two shows on the 15th and another on the 17th, we'll have an extra week off (to make up for the 2nd!) and commence Term 3 on Monday 23rd July. That means a 9 week term.

Don't forget, term fees are payable in full by the third week of term (6th August) and can be paid by cash or cheque!

Rehearsal
Monday 2nd July at the usual rehearsal venue at 7.30pm sharp - please arrive by 7.15pm. We will be joined by members from Sydney Gay & Lesbian Choir and Door in the Wall (and possibly the Randwick Proms) - so please be punctual.

Extra Concerts and Thank You

Dear SPC members,

I am so thrilled that so many of you have offered to give up your precious time to come and support the Choir of Hard Knocks when they perform in Sydney next month!

Due to a huge public response, the Opera House has now offered to put on two extra concerts on Sun July 15 at 2pm and 6pm to help us raise more funds for the Choir and cover our costs of travelling to Sydney - as you can imagine bringing a contingent of 50 singers all with some mental or physical disability plus a dozen support staff for six days - is no mean feat - more about that later (aaaaaarh!!!!).

It will mean so much to have you perform alongside Choir of Hard Knocks again (after their impromptu performance with us at the National Gallery of Victoria) - you have been so supportive and caring of my dream to create a better world for these beautiful people - I know that it will be an experience you will never forget!

I look forward to seeing you all next Mon July 2 at the rehearsal and sharing a "cuppa" with you - like the old days!

It's been noticed that a previous post advised that the Choir of Hard Knocks show was on Wednesday 18th July.

This was the original date, but it was rescheduled to Tuesday 17th July - we were remiss in not posting this change earlier - sorry!!

Choir of Hard Knocks Update

Lots of news for the Choir of Hard Knocks. As most of you would be aware, the CD has now been launched in the ABC shops. It includes the songs previously recorded for the Christmas CD, plus a couple of new ones and highlights from the Gala Launch in March of this year.

The CD is selling extremely well - they've sold over 5000 copies, it's sold out of some shops and is likely to go Gold in the next 2 weeks.

In conjunction with the airing of the documentary series, there is a photo exhibition at the ABC at Ultimo. The photos were taken by Chris Beck throughout the filming of the series and feature on the opening and closing credits. It's well worth a quick look-see if you're in the area.

But wait, there's more. Hot on the heels of the forthcoming shows at the Melbourne Town Hall on 24th June, the Choir will be coming to Sydney to perform at the Sydney Opera House on Wednesday 18th July. So mark the date in your diaries now - more details to come as soon as they're announced.

All members are invited to come along to the RSL on Monday night after rehearsal to have a swift one (or two - but no more than that if you're the designated driver...) to just wind down and have a chat.

Logos au-go-go

It's time to get serious about branding.

As mentioned at rehearsal last Monday, we need to start moving on getting the word out on the street about SPC. To do this we need a logo.

I've sent out an email to the membership today with those logos already submitted. If you've got a logo you'd like to add to the mix, either send it in, or have it ready for this Monday's rehearsal where we'll be voting.

It opens on 11th June and runs to 14th July - some of us had the joy of seeing the Melbourne Theatre Company's production of the show last year and it was an absolute hoot!

Yes, Idle Pops is back.

This is a chance for current members to strut their stuff in any way, shape or form that they like (but remember, it's a family show).

When? Friday 11th May at 7.30pm
Where? Upstairs at The Newington Hotel, 292 Stanmore Road, Stanmore
How much? $25 for adults and $15 for kids (12 and under)

Ticket cost includes dinner - drinks are at bar prices.

Former members are encouraged to come along - there'll be a final hurrah with Jonathon conducting us for the last time :-(

Brand New Musical Production

"Dear Cabaret Lovers,

We are so proud to announce the first ever STATEMENT PRODUCTION. We've put together a stellar cast of five of out top musical theatre performers for the Australian premiere of David Friedman's Listen to My Heart. It's going to be such a treat to see and hear these amazing voices together on the intimate Statement stage. And we're really privileged to have the talents of Neil Gooding as director and Bev Kennedy as Musical Director for the show.

The show is a concert of American composer David Friedman's wonderful songs.

Visit to Australia by Gemma Sisia (School of St Jude)

Gemma Sisia is coming back to Australia in 2 weeks for all the "Friends of St Jude's" functions around the country.

Below are the details of the functions in Sydney (there are also functions in other centres - details can be forwarded upon request). Apparently seats are going quickly so if you're interested book now!

Gemma will be promoting the book about St Jude's as the school will directly profit from each copy sold and there will be a free DVD with each book so that you can take it home for family and friends to see.

"Friends of St Jude's" Events - Raising Awareness and Money!
The aim of these functions is to:
1. Bring current and new supporters together in a friendly atmosphere.
2. Educate people who have never heard of this school, by showing a short visual presentation. Gemma will be giving updates and information about future projects for both old and prospective supporters.
3. Launch the book "St Jude's" and sell copies. Sales of the book at these events will benefit the school directly. People who buy a book during the function will be given a free DVD about the school as well. So whilst everyone's having fun at the event, the school will also be benefiting; which is a true win-win situation.

Okay, so it looks like Jonathon's debut on Spicks & Specks isn't this Wednesday (4th April), but stayed tuned and we'll post as soon as the date's confirmed.

However, Jonathon and some of the Choir of Hard Knocks members will be on 9am with Kim and David on Channel 10 this Friday (6th April).

And don't forget the Tenor Australis gig this coming Sunday (8th April) at Canterbury Bankstown Leagues Club at Belmore. Initial enquiries with the club indicate it's free entry to the show - but don't hold me to that one!

"Dear APC members,

Firstly I would like to say a huge thank you to Tracey, Matt, Peter, Joanne and everyone that has been keeping APC running so smoothly in my absence over the past weeks.

I am sorry that I have not been able to be with you all during the past few weeks and, as you know, I have been very busy finishing my ABC project with the Choir of Hard Knocks over the past months, as well as my other work obligations here in Melbourne that now preclude me from getting up to work with you on Monday nights.

I suppose I knew that the time would have to come when I would have to make a choice for so many reasons (career, personal, financial, lifestyle, health etc) about where I would end up having to focus my attention and in which city.

Given the enormous demands on my personal time now with my work commitments and possibilities arising out of the ABC documentary that will go to air from May 15, I am no longer going to be able to make the commitment to continue as your Music Director with Australian Pop Choir in Sydney.

I know that many of you will be as sad about this as I am, as we have all invested a huge amount of our personal energy and time, as well as sharing many wonderful hours making music together in rehearsal and performance, as well as the wonderful friendships that have been formed during the past 5 years of APC's existence.

This does not mean, however, that APC cannot continue to run and be the wonderful choir that we have all worked so hard to build and love, and that the friendships that we have well cease!

I am very willing to help assist with finding a new musical and artistic leader if you, as a group, want to continue - but you will need to really support each other and have the desire to continue, without me at the helm, as a "team" - otherwise we will have no other choice than to "close shop" as they say.

I would like to propose that we meet on Saturday April 14th at 6pm at the Petersham RSL or somewhere mutually convenient to discuss the alternatives for APC continuing.

There are many fine conductors and musicians in Sydney and I believe that APC is very capable of moving forward with Matt, Peter, Tracey and the solid core of singers that currently makes up APC today.

Obviously you will need some time to think about what I am proposing, and to most of you it will come as no surprise given the fact that I live in Melbourne.

If you can't make the meeting but would like to write your thoughts and suggestions down, please forward them to Tracey and me and we can table them for discussion - your input and concerns are most valued and I will do my best to address them at the meeting.

This is not goodbye however - you can't get rid of me that easily!

I would like you to know that I deeply value each and everyone of you and your wonderful commitment to my vision with APC during the past 5 years and I do hope that you as a group will move forward to even greater things.

My best wishes to you all - and I hope to see you on Saturday April 14th.

Good news/bad news

The bad news is that the workshop that was proposed for this Saturday, 24th March will not proceed due to lack of interest.

The good news is that Jonathon spent last Friday afternoon at the ABC studios in Melbourne taping an episode of "Spicks and Specks".

Homotones Show - Important Information

Here's the latest information about the Homotones show on Wednesday 21st February at the Metro Theatre in the city.

Second Rehearsal: Tuesday 20th February at 7.30pm at Summer Hill School. We need to confirm numbers on Monday night - we'll only do the second rehearsal if there's enough members available to attend.

Soundcheck: 6pm for both APC and SGLC. Be there are 5.45pm so that we can do the soundcheck first and then have time to change etc. Leave valuables at home if you can - there is a warm-up/change room that we will be sharing with other performers so be aware.

Doors: Open at 7pm and the show starts at 7.30pm

Late breaking news - there is now just the one show with the Homotones: Wednesday 21st February.

The venue has changed - the show will now be at the Metro Theatre on George Street in the city (opposite Hoyts) at 7.30pm.

International Women's Day

Out Of The Blue are hosting a one day workshop for women for International Women's Day on Saturday 3rd March at Dapto.

The day consists of a workshop then a concert in the evening. Registration is $40 which includes lunch on the day plus music and a CD/tape.

Backing Singers Required

The Homotones are looking for our help. One of the other guest artists at the forthcoming show on February 21st is Darlene, a transexual vocalist, and she's in need of some backing singers.

She's looking for 4 singers - 2 male and 2 female. The songs she's singing are "Let's Get Loud" and "I Will Survive".

Hopefully we'll have more information soon, but have a think about it and if you're interested be prepared to put your hand up on Monday night at our first rehearsal back.

St Jude's - The Book...

Two years ago Pan Macmillan approached St Jude's founder Gemma Sisia to write a book about her life, including the dramas of moving to Tanzania and setting up the school.

She initially rejected the approach due to time constraints, but the book has now been written by a ghost writer, Sophe Lance, from Sydney, and it includes over 70 pictures.

The book is released on April 1st, and Gemma is coming back to Australia for a book tour in April and May. Pan Macmillan have offered to help to co-ordinate a "Friends of St Jude's night" in each of the major capital cities.

If anyone's interested in helping to organise a Friends of St Jude's dinner in Sydney, contact Gemma at the email address below and she'll put you in touch with the people at Pan Macmillan.

The Tallis Scholars Australian Tour
